The Dreyfus Affair was a political scandal which divided France during the 1890s and early 1900s. It involved the wrongful conviction of Jewish military officer Alfred Dreyfus (1859-1935) for treason.
The Dreyfus Affair was a political scandal which divided France during the 1890s and early 1900s. It involved the wrongful conviction of Jewish military officer Alfred Dreyfus (1859-1935) for treason. The trial and realization that Anti-Semitism was not going anywhere inspired Herzl, who was an assimilationist, to go the other direction and found the political Zionist movement. The psychological effect was not limited to Herzl. Many other assimilationists became Zionists or leaned more toward that direction.
