The Dreyfus Affair was a political scandal which divided France during the 1890s and early 1900s. It involved the wrongful conviction of Jewish military officer Alfred Dreyfus (1859-1935) for treason. The trial and realization that Anti-Semitism was not going anywhere inspired Herzl, who was an assimilationist, to go the other direction and found the political Zionist movement. The psychological effect was not limited to Herzl.
